Ranikhet means ‘Queens’s field’ is spread along a ridge at 1829 meters, covered with pine and Oke forests. Ranikhet is still a cantonment and the army’s young recruits can be seen drilling on the parade grounds.
Sadar Bazaar is the main shopping area, and has a number4 of small restaurants and hotels. The bazaar is the noisiest and crowded part of the town.

Places to see at Ranikhet:

The upper Mall, in contrast, offers peaceful walks. A few km along the upper Mall, 10km from Sadar Bazaar, is Chaubatia. Originally a sanatorium for British troops, it now houses of Govt. Fruit Gardens & Research Station which grows 200 varieties of fruit. A 3km walk from Chaubatia leads to the artificial lake of Bhaludam. Uphat 6 km fromSadar Bazaar on Almora Road, is the site of one of the height golf courses, with the views of Grate Himalayas. One of the best view points within easy walking distance of the main bazaar is the Hera Khan Temple and Ashram, 4 km from Sadar bazaar.
Dwarahat, 35 km from Ranikhet on the Badrinath road Tarikhet, 8 km from Ranikhet on the Ramnagar road. Sitlakhet 26km Manila 77km and Chaukutiya 85km are all beautiful picnic spots.

The small town of Almora is perched on a five kilometers long horse – shoe shaped ridge, 1650m above sea level. The town looks. out over a fertile terraced valley and four ranges of hills Banari Devi, Kasan Devi, Shayahi Devi and Katarmal. Beyond them are the Trishul and Nanda Devi peaks I the Grate Himalayas.
The temple of Nanda Devi and Khazanchi Mohalla provide a glimpse into the past. The highest point of the Almora bazaar, above the Mall, is the Collectorate. It is in fact at the old Almora fort that a 360 degree view of Almora and the surrounding mountains can be has. Brigthon end Corner, just 2 km from the bus station on the Mall, is the most poipular point for sunset and sunrise views of the Himalayas. Simtola, 3km from Almora is a picnic spot covered by a thick blanket of pine trees.

Places to see at Almora:

Some 400 temples were built during AD 700 and 1300 in Almore district alone. The Sun temple, near village of Katarmal, 17km from Almora, is one of the most famous. Some 30km from Almora is the forest of Binsar, one of the most beautiful places in the district.

  • Jageshwar: 34 km from Almora by road, is celebrated for its magnificent cluster of 150 temples, profusely carved and and dating back to the 9th century AD. There is a tourist bungalow for overnight stay.
  • Kausani: 52 km from Almora at 1890m, is a popular holiday center. this small settlement on top of a mountainoffers views of nearly 400km of snow. The view of the peaks of kadarnath, Chaukhamba, Badrinath, Nandaghunti, Trishul, Nanda Devi, Panchachuli and Api and Nampa (in Nepal) is breathtakingly beautiful. The best time to view is between September and May. There is a pleasant tourist bungalow and also the Anashakti Yoga Ashram where Mahatma Gandhi once stayed in 1929.
  • Binsar: it is one of the most charming spots famous for a closer and wider view of the Himalayas. It is 30km from Almora.
  • Bajjnath: at 1,125 m is an ancient religious centre in the Garur Valley, 20km from Kausani. It is best known for its Parvati temple which enshrines a beautiful sculpted, human size image of the goddess and is said to date from the 12th or 13th century.

Access to Almora Bus services link Almora with other places in the region including Nainital (67 km away) and Ranikhet (50 km). The nearest railhead is Kathgodam (90 km from Almora via Khairua)
